Just outside of the walled city, Dubrovnik's first updated luxury hotel is a modern boutique-style resort desperately needed in this flourishing historic city. Located on a thoroughfare of speedy scooters and walking locals, the hotel is perched atop a granite bluff directly above Miramare Bay within walking distance of the Old Town. A stylish facade of glass and chrome is a gathering point for flashy Russian tourists and hotel residents that gather in the sleek, yet slightly sterile lobby with its natural stone walls and not-so-comfy couches overlooking the Adriatic. Using mostly Croatian artists for the olive wood paneling and elaborate walls of grey granite, locally renowned architect Renata Strok designed most of the hotel interior. The property is home to two restaurants usually filled with residing guests and curious visitors that frequent the outdoor lounge overlooking the private rock beach far below. An in-house spa offers a state-of-the-art treatment facility unrivaled by any of the local hotels, as well as an indoor pool conducive to colder spring and fall seasons. While newer hotels will surely knock the Bellevue off it's top-notch status, for the time being it's the most sophisticated and luxurious design property in Dubrovnik.

The Room

The Bellevue is located in a ‘60s-style Communist resort compound that was so thoroughly renovated in 2005-2006 that it’s façade is barely recognizable. Hotel rooms are arranged along long hallways with street or head-on ocean views. A total of 93-rooms are designed for minimalist pleasure-seekers with flat-screen TV’s and low-density furnishings selected for style over comfort. Thick wool drapery reveals retrofitted windows that open to small glass-enclosed balconies large enough for standing but not much else. Bathrooms are still the same size as before, but with updated all-white fixtures and generous showerheads that pour piping hot water. Walls are strewn with original artwork from painter Fedor Džamonja and stenographer Željko Senečić that are better than your usual run of mass-produced hotel pieces. Breakfast is included in all room rates, served in Vapor restaurant or beachfront Nevera serving a Dalmatian-spin on cuisine from a native South African chef.
